Becoming a Monk in Thailand

As for a real Thai buddhist, most of the Thai men will become a monk or "buat phra" for their mother when they reach the age of 20. One of the reason being is when their mother died, she would hold on the his monk's robe and go to heaven. Another reason will be, good merits for all his family members and relatives. It will depends on himself for how long he wanted to stay in the monkhood from 3 months to 3 years, but some chose to become a monk for life..

Ceremony of Hair-Shaving on the Eve of Ordination

This will be the "tools" for shaving the hair and eyebrows. The lotus leave is to "collect" all his hair as none of his hair is allowed to drop on the floor.

All his family members, relatives, neighbors and close friends will take turn according to "rank", cut some of his hair and at the same time giving him a blessing for a prosperous future and forgive all the bad things that he had done.

Once everyone had finished, it's time to shampoo the hair and shaved all his hair and eyebrows by monk.

He will be showered with soap and everyone took turns in pouring water over his head and body, again giving him a blessing.
Finally, some herbs, which are yellow when mixed with water, are rubbed all over his head and body.

Once again he's been poured with water to clean up everything.

After he took a shower, he then changed into his white clothes. At this point, he is now known as "naak" in Thai or "naga" in English.

It's a chanting and sermon time...

The Day of the Ordination or "buat" in Thai

The procession took place from his house to the temple with family members, relatives and friends, carrying the things that he needed to use as a monk.

With the hired band...

The procession got off with the dancers (relatives and friends) led the way , wailing and cheering..all the way to the temple..

He is still wearing his white clothes, holding lotus flowers, incense sticks and candles. His bald head is being sheltered from the sun by a large umbrella.

Once we reached the temple, he paid "respect" to the shrine.

And continue to walk clockwise the temple for three times.

Just before he entered the temple, he threw the ribbon flowers (which contains coin) into the crowd. The coins are considered for luck.

Before he entered the main door of the temple, he's been carried to touch the top of the door.

It was the time for the ordination of him as a monk. He is facing towards the Buddha images, opposite the abbot and surrounded by monks.

The abbot placed the amsa (the shoulder cloth) over his head covering his left shoulder. He then told him to go with one of the monk to get changed into the rest of the robes.

He then went to the back of the ordination hall behind the Buddha images to wear the robes with the help of a monk.

Once he was properly dressed, he went to kneel down in front of the abbot again. Then he was informed that he is now a samanera (novice monk).

Finally, he's a monk now...

U.S. calls first UN gay rights resolution historic

GENEVA, Switzerland -- The United Nations endorsed the rights of gay, lesbian and transgender people for the first time Friday, passing a resolution hailed as historic by the U.S. and other backers and decried by African and Islamic countries.
The declaration was cautiously worded, expressing "grave concern" about abuses suffered by people because of their sexual orientation, and it commissioned a global report on discrimination against gay people. Activists called it a remarkable shift on an issue that has divided the global body for decades, and credited the Obama administration's push for gay rights at home and abroad with helping to win support for the resolution.
"This represents a historic moment to highlight the human rights abuses and violations that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people face around the world based solely on who they are and whom they love," U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said in a statement.
Following tense negotiations, members of the Geneva-based UN Human Rights Council narrowly voted in favor of the declaration put forward by South Africa, with 23 votes in favor and 19 against.
Backers included the U.S., the European Union, Brazil and other Latin American countries. Those against included Russia, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria and Pakistan. China, Burkina Faso, Kyrgyzstan and Zambia abstained; Libya was earlier suspended from the rights body.
The resolution expressed "grave concern at acts of violence and discrimination, in all regions of the world, committed against individuals because of their sexual orientation and gender identity."
More importantly, activists said, it also established a formal UN process to document human rights abuses against gays, including discriminatory laws and acts of violence. According to Amnesty International, consensual same-sex relations are illegal in 76 countries worldwide, while harassment and discrimination are common in many more.
The prospect of having their laws scrutinized in this way went too far for many of the council's 47 member nations.
Speaking on behalf of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, Pakistan said the resolution had "nothing to do with fundamental human rights."

Gay and Lesbian Phuket

Phuket Island, the paradise island for gays and lesbians, located about 870 kms (500 miles) from Bangkok, is Thailand's largest island and one of the most popular holiday destinations in Southeast Asia. Lying in the Indian Ocean, the island has spectacular beaches, sparkling crystal-clear blue waters, picturesque landscape, historical and cultural sights as well as endless offers of all imaginable entertaining amenities. Phuket truly is a dream destination.

The winds blowing over the island keep it warm and humid throughout the year. The hottest months are December thru April, followed by the rainy season May thru November.

Few will forget the images following the tsumani on December 26, 2004 and the devastation it reeked on the island coastline of Phuket. Today, the island has rebuilt, and is a bustling holiday destination resort once again. Every year it gets more and more popular with hordes coming to soak up the sun, sea, sand and scenery. For many the sun, the beach and the partying go hand in hand. Phuket's reputation as a partying hotspot is well deserved. With an international crowd of revelers, loud music, dancing, bars, live bands and jazz go side by side with the go-go bars.

The blossoming gay community is only 5 minutes walk from the beach. In addition to several gay and lesbian hotels, inns, guesthouses and bed and breakfast accommodations, there are well over 20 gay bars and clubs, a gay disco with 2 shows nightly, gay restaurants and cafés. Rates start at around 50 Baht for a bed in a dormitory, guesthouses from 250 Baht per night, up to 20,000 Baht and more per night for a luxury suite in a big 5 star hotel or a small boutique hotel. But remember that not all hotels are gay friendly and they will charge extra if you want to have an overnight visitor. If you are planning to visit Patong Beach during the high season (November - April) you should make room reservations well in advance as the most popular hotels are often fully booked 3-4 months in advance.

The Phuket gay scene is centered around the main resort town on Patong Beach, where you'll find most of the bars, clubs and shops catering to gay travelers. Patong Beach is the most famous beach on Phuket Island and has a wide variety of daytime activities and a amazing night life. From here, visitors can enjoy any of Phuket's 17 sandy beaches. Remember that public nudity is illegal in Thailand. If you stay outside Patong and want to enjoy the resort’s nightlife you will probably spend a lot of money on tuk-tuk (local taxi) drivers taking you back and forth.

Whether it's world class diving in the Andaman Sea, golf at world-standard championship courses or exciting eco-adventures in tropical forests, Phuket has it all. Take an exhilarating speedboat trip to the surrounding islands, or enjoy a serene cruise around mystical Phang Nga Bay.

For those seeking a break from the sun, sea and sand, there are other parts of the island well worth exploring such as the national parks with hidden lagoons, the beautiful tropical islands that surround Phuket, and the famous elephant safaris.

Phuket is an island of truly international cuisine including Scandinavian, Mediterranean, speciality seafood, Japanese and of course traditional Thai restaurants.

Lastly, if this is your first visit to Thailand, remember that their culture is very different to a western one and respecting their values, culture and traditions will go a long way to ensuring you vacation in Thailand and in Phuket will be as wonderful, magical and memorable as you would hope it will be.

So, whether you are looking for peace and quiet, fun, excitement, culture, simple or fine dining, Phuket, Thailand had it all for the gay and lesbian traveler.
